Students at Pagosa Springs High School (PHS) began taking an advisory class, held 3 times a week, during the 2014-2015 school year. Students remain in their advisory class with the same advisory teacher for each of the 4 years of enrollment at PHS. Each grade level has 6 separate advisory classes with one of the 6 pirate colors of grey, gold, white, silver, yellow, and black. These colors create the color teams used in the Pirate Cup competition.
The 4 goals of advisory are to develop relationships & increase investment in education, foster academic success & support post-secondary planning, enhance school culture & spirit, and build character & citizenship. Teachers receive lesson plans via the Google calendar, and may have a common advisory, where every student in the school participates in the same lesson at the same time, or a lesson specific to the grade level of their advisory class.
